Fishing Fish That Fish Humans

by Caitlin and Jack, age 10, Australia

On the planet Htrae (H-tray), fish walk on their fins and wear tuxedos. They go to the jetty for fun and fish Humans. But the fish don’t wish to hurt the humans, so what they do is put BIG tank of waterproof hamburgers into the sea to bait them into the tank. Then they haul the tank back onto the dock and they have humans eating hamburgers!

One day at dusk, all was peaceful on Htrae and some of the nocturnal fish were coming out to fish humans. The water was still and the weather was warm when suddenly a human rocket landed in the lake. A lady called June and a man called Caleb stepped out. They looked around and the first thing they saw were fish fishing.
“It seems a bit cruel for them to be hunting their own kind.” Exclaimed June.
“Forget that, WHY ARE THERE FISH WALKING ON LAND!? HOW DO THEY EVEN BREATHE!?” Cried Caleb. The two astronauts took an inflatable yacht that auto inflates on contact with water.
“Don’t expect to be able to communicate with them.” Said June when they got to shore.
“Communicate with WHO? Blub blub blub.” Said an unknown voice.
The two astronauts looked for the source of the voice.
“Hi, blububub. I’m Jeffy boy.”
“HI, I’m Caleb! I’M FROM EARTH!” June shoved her hand over Caleb’s mouth and whispered:

“Dude he might be dangerous.”
“I can hear you ya know.” Said Jeffy boy. “Would you like to come fish with me? Tonight’s load will be good.”
“Ok.” Replied the astronauts and they walked to the wharf. They took notes on the way these alien fish fished but when the tank came back out they gasped. It was filled with humans and the humans had fish gills.
“ARGH!” Screamed the astronauts and ran to free their caged comrades.
“What are you doing?!” Cried poor Jeffy boy. The astronauts took the humans to the rocket and taught them how to breath air on the surface. The human fish went back underwater and taught the other humans to breath air. The humans came up to the surface and pushed all the fish into the water.
“My tux!” Screamed a fish-man to the left of the lake.
“My dress!” Screamed a fish-woman to the right.
“Job well done.” Said June as they headed back to the rocket.
“Time to tell the scientists what we found.” Said Caleb. 7 decades later, Htrae had many houses built on it and it was illegal to fish for fish, but sometimes fish still fished for humans, and that is the end!

The Bad Art Werewolf

by Ruba, age 10, New York

Our story begins last Saturday afternoon, when we went to NAGONY or the National Art Gallery Of New York. There was an exhibit near the sculpture garden place that had a buncha robots that looked like humans that were doing trapeze. There were weird fish tanks with no fish in them next to the robots. My dad was with me, and he is an artist who has a picky opinion on art. He did NOT like this art, so he turned into a werewolf. Then he shot a buncha teeth at all the robots and they broke. We got kicked out of the museum ‘cause we broke the exhibit, and we never returned. The End

The Bear Claw

by Milo and Theo, ages 9 and 7, UK

Once upon a time there was a baker who sold the best bread in the whole wide world. She earned a lot of money selling her bread because it was so good and everyone wanted to buy it. One day a robber stole all of the bread and the ingredients and the equipment! The baker called the police and said, 'Help, help, what will I do?' The police said, 'We'll be there right away,' and they investigated the scene. When they arrived, the floor of the bakery was covered in flour and there were giant bear footprints leading outside. The police followed them all the way up to the top of the volcano-cave, which was a secret cave that only bad guys and monsters could enter. The police were scared because they had heard myths about the cave. So the baker went instead. She went inside the cave and it was cozy and light with big chandeliers everywhere. There was a huge industrial kitchen and inside there were animals having a party and baking bread. The baker joined them and they decided to turn the cave into a local bakery, and they made the best loaves of bread together. They called their bakery The Cakery. The most special pastries that everyone came from miles away to taste were their worldwide, famous, legendary bear claws (with chocolate on top!).

The Snowball Safe

by Brynn, age 11, Michigan

There was once a girl named Lily. She had dark hair, green eyes, and was 5 feet tall by the time she was 10 years old. That was when it all started. She had just wanted to build a snowman. Being kids, her brother and sister, James and Ginny, wanted to build it with her. She allowed it without knowing what she was getting herself into. Her mom came out with them to make sure they didn't get into any trouble. Lily decided that they could make a GIANT snowman! She invited all of their neighbors to help build it.

Then, something started, that she had never meant to happen... A snowball fight!!!!!

It all started when they had been putting the middle onto the bottom. Part of the middle had fallen off because it was bigger than all off them combined. It fell onto one of their neighbors heads. No one noticed. Except for the neighbor, that is. The neighbor threw a snowball at someone else and it caused a chain reaction.

Soon, everyone started throwing snowballs at each-other.

People were throwing snowballs so rapidly and shouting so loudly, that they woke the king of the yetis, Jeff, from his sleep, making an eternal winter. Jeff came down, froze everyone in sight, and crushed the house. Then he buried them in the snow. Everyone, that is, except Lily. She was an extremely quick thinker and had been able to hollow out the inside of the bottom snowball. She had then climbed inside the snowball and built a wall of snow in front of her so she wouldn't be found. She called it The Snowball Safe. Jeff couldn't let all of the snow go to waste, and so he sent down his whole kingdom down to play in it. When they got down, they looked at the snowman.

"So Bob," said one, "Does this snowman look at all suspicious to you?"

"No Frank," said Bob, "It just looks like a normal snowman to me."

"Well, if this is important later, I'll say I told you so," Frank replied.

"Foreshadowing!" said Lily.

"Who said that?" asked Bob.

"Nobody..." Lily answered, "It's just me, the wind!"

"Oh. That makes total sense and will never backfire!" said Frank.

Eventually, The Snowball Safe froze and the wall in front of it became a door. Shortly after that, the yeti kingdom became bored and decided to go back to the palace. Lily heard the foot-steps recede and once they were gone, she ran to the store and, since no one was there, she was able to get everything for free. She bought 38,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 gallons of ice cream, ran back to The Snowball Safe, and put it all in, with room to spare. She went into what remained of the house and found a TV, spare clothes, her guitar, a bed, her toothbrush, a pillow, and some blankets. She put them all into The Snowball Safe too.

Then, she searched the snow for the frozen statues of James, Ginny, and her mom. When she found them, she brought them into The Snowball Safe. It was warm in there for some reason, warm enough to melt ice. But The Snowball Safe was magic so it didn't melt.

Apparently, so were the statues that were once her family. She then realized what she had to do. She had to put the yetis back to sleep.

She grabbed her guitar and sprinted to the castle and by the time she got there, she was panting, which was weird, because it was less than 20 steps away.

She disguised herself as a yeti and broke into the castle. She told all of the yetis that she was a musician who had been traveling across the world on tour.

They let Lily play and slowly they fell asleep. Lily ran back home and brought everyone into The Snowball Safe.

"What is this place?" asked Ginny.

"This, my friends, is The Snowball Safe." Lily replied.

"Whoa!!!" Ginny gaped at The Snowball Safe.

"I think this is going to be where our family lives now," Lily told them.

"Do you think we can all fit?" James asked.

"Well," Lily answered, "This snowball is more than twice the size our house was, so, yeah, definitely."

"Yeah!!!" They all exclaimed.

And so they've lived in The Snowball Safe ever since. And it's said that if you go to their house, it still stands.

Claudia the Cloud

by Cecilia, age 8, UK

Once there was a cloud called Claudia. Claudia was a special cloud. Claudia could morph. When she morphed she could change into as many shapes as she wanted. She loved to do this because she loved to watch the humans down below watch her fun unique shapes. Unfortunately where she lived there were loads of rainy days so whenever there was a rain cloud she would go as high high high as possible to get away from all the stormy weather and when ever there was white weather when all the clouds would get stuck together and there was white sky she would heave and pull apart but it was often too hard. She needed everyone to help pull but the all just simply refused. One day she got fed up with all the bad weather. When its raining the people didn’t want to lie on their back and stare at her morphing in to bunnies and trains. So she visited and old friend and went to their treehouse. She asked for advice about all the storm and cloudy weather, and to her surprise he said yes. But how? Well you have to go far far away all the way to the Sahara dessert and help all the people. Oh that’s easy so she set off on her long journey to the Sahara dessert across seas and mountains and cities she finally arrived. To her surprise she noticed no other clouds for MILES! She also noticed that all the people were sad and VERY VERY thirsty. Immediately she began morphing into as many funny, weird, unique & satisfying shapes but no-one seamed to bother. This got her puzzled, suddenly un idea came “all these people are thirsty not bored they want water!” So she puffed up her chest (or the bit that counts as a chest) and made it rain she found a big hole and created a fresh water lake the people were so happy! She rushed back and thanked him for his help, she went outside and made it rain.THE END!!!

The Beautiful Potato

by Zeke, age 8, Virginia

Once upon a time in a town there was a giant beautiful potato. Everyone adored the potato. It was very magical and even beautiful. It would do things for the town when the town needed it. For example, one day the blacksmith, whose name was Gerald, ran out of space to keep the things he made. He went to the beautiful and magical potato and said, “I would like a bigger workspace.” That night, the potato, who was very strong, pushed the walls out and made the blacksmith’s house three times as big as it was before. Another time, the mason, Sophia, fell off a wall she was building. She broke her left leg. The potato sensed that Sophia was hurt and rolled all the way to where Sophia was. Sophia hopped over to the potato and rested on it. The next morning when she woke up, Sophia was healed! Most recently, Terry the librarian was concerned because all the books in the library hadn’t been returned. The potato was, at that moment, sitting in the town fountain. Terry went to the fountain to find the potato. He was pretty easy to find. The potato was 10 feet long and five feet wide. He was just chillin’ in the fountain. Terry explained his problem to the potato. The potato rolled around the town pulling a wagon harnessed around it and collecting the library books. The potato was psychic and psychically told the townspeople to come outside and return their books. Terry came along with the potato and told everyone he would let their fines slide that time. One day a giant carrot rolled into the town with some travelers. The potato was surprised to see another beautiful magical vegetable. (All giant vegetables are magical). The potato felt threatened because usually there was only one giant vegetable allowed in the town, and that was her. The potato was named Olivia. Olivia rolled up to the carrot and explained the town rule.“Did you know that if a second magical vegetable enters this town it will melt or be boiled and eaten by the townspeople?” The carrot was alarmed! “WHAT?!” the carrot exclaimed. “I know, it’s surprising,” Olivia said. The carrot just started. It was temporarily paralyzed in shock. While Olivia was looking at the carrot, who seemed terrified, she had a change of heart.“Maybe it would be nice to have a friend,” thought Olivia. Because even though the townspeople loved her, they were always asking her to do things. She always wanted to try new things, like archery, baking bread and making matzo ball soup and pasta, and painting, but she didn’t have anyone to do these things with. Olivia went to the town square and started to float. Magic energy flowed from the giant potato. In a few seconds Olivia came back to the carrot and said, “now you can enter” and the carrot moved into the town. THE END (for now at least)

What it Feels Like to be a Ghost

by Sofia, age 8, California

One foggy morning, Windy the ghost was floating around the Empire State Building. When she floated to the top floor, she saw people talking with each other. She felt she wanted friends so much. Windy wished she were a human with a lot of friends, but ghosts need to be alone. At night, Windy flew near the city houses to look at the sleeping children.¨What good sleep, but ghosts do not sleep,¨Windy said sadly. She always wanted to sleep in the warm blankets, but instead the ghosts just flew around the graveyard. Her mom, Scarcy, was a ghost who scared people. Her mom was mad at Windy for flying near the Empire State Building. Windy was not allowed anymore to fly to the city and dash into taxis. Ghosts did not like the annoying beep sound of the taxis at all but Windy was different. Windy was determined to flee to the city to see how babies turn into children and children turn into adults or find a genie and ask for the genie to turn her into a human. Windy was supposed to learn by her mom, but she dreamed of being human. All day long she sat in the graveyard thinking. The feeling of a ghost was miserable, Windy thought. 7 years later Windy still was a ghost and her dream had not come true yet, but she was still determined to become a human.”

The New Species

by Gabriella, age 10, Virginia

As he sprinted across the forest, Jerry periodically looked behind his shoulder, after running for about a mile, Jerry was out of breath and urged himself to stop running and take a break. He immediately called the person he knew would help him the most, Tec Jones, the best detective in the world. After thanking the sky for cell service, he pressed on the call icon for the contact, Tec Jones. The phone rang a few times. “Come on, pick up, pick up!” Jerry pleaded to the phone. After ringing several more times, it switched to voice mail. Even though Tec didn’t pick up, Jerry had faith that Tec would take his case. “Hello?” Jerry said. “My name is Jerry Hodge and I need our help. You see, there is this- this creature that has been in the papers for a long time now. Just a few hours ago, I went into the place where the creature sightings were to see if it was real. Turns out it is.” Jerry said, trembling at the thought of seeing the abnormality again. “If you get this please help, please.” He said pleading to his mobile phone. He ended the call and started heading out of the forest.

As Tec Jones, a private detective, and his partner, Dr. Jim Bennet were walking to their apartment, Tec got a voicemail from a person named Jerry Hodge. “Do you know anyone by the name of Jerry Hodge?” Tec asked his partner, Jim. “No,” Jim said curiously. “Why do you ask?” Well, I just got a voicemail from a person by that name.” Tec explained. “Probably just another client,” Jim said. “You should listen to it,” Jim suggested. “Ok,” Tec said. “Let’s see what my next case is.” “Hello?” Said the voice from the phone. Tec presumed he was the man named Jerry was in his early twenties. “My name is Jerry Hodge and I need our help. You see, there is this- this creature that has been in the papers for a long time now. Just a few hours ago, I went into the place where the creature sightings were to see if it was real. Turns out it is.” Jerry’s pre-recorded voice said. Even though his voice was a little muffled, Jim could hear the concern in the man’s voice and started to feel bad for him. “The location is Poonawala town, east forest.” Said Jerry’s voice. And with that, the recording ended.

“It sounds like a pretty good case,” Jim said to Tec, feeling bad for the man and trying to convince him. “Ok,” said Tec. “I would have never taken this case but since I’m so bored…” Said Tec purposely leaving Jim in suspense. “I’ll take it” “Alright!” Said Jim. Tec had never seen Jim this happy. Tec turned on the phone, put in his passcode, and accepted the case by saying: I’ll be right over. After Tec responded to the voicemail, the two men switched routes and started walking to their destination.

When Tec and his partner got to the area, which was a big forest, Jerry was waiting there for them, trembling in fear. Tec had asked what the creature looked like but he didn’t get a very accurate answer. Even though Jerry, was terrified to go into the forest again, Tec convinced him to come because he would be a big help in finding out the exact location of the animal within the massive, tree-filled forest.

The two men started following Jerry. They walked around for a very long time, Tec was starting to lose trust in Jerry, Jim kept confirming every so often that Jerry knew what he was going.“I know what I’m doing,” He said, trembling, “I know what I’m doing!” After about an hour of walking, the men started to get tired but the Jerry kept assuring them that they were coming close. Tec knew he shouldn’t have taken the case, the man probably had hallucinations. “Maybe this wasn’t such a good idea,” Tec said, “You keep saying we are close but I don’t think there’s any-” Tec stopped dead in his tracks there, he saw a massive creature breathing down on him, saliva dripping from its mouth.

Tec and the others were paralyzed in fear. Even though he was scared, his master detective skills kicked in; He started looking at the creature with a magnifying glass that could look at a microscopic scale. He scanned the creature as it lurked towards them. Then, he saw it, the creature’s feet, not only where they pixelized, the massive, red-eyed thing that they were looking at, didn’t even make a sound when it stepped into the dry leaves in the forest.

So, after safely escaping, Jerry invited the two men to say for dinner. While and after they ate the delicious meal that Jerry and prepared for them, Jim and Tec thought long and hard until Tec shouted “I’ve got it!”

“Amazing!” Jim said, “What is it?”

“The creature that we saw, wasn’t a creature. It was a hologram!” Tec said.

“How did figure that out?” Said Jerry, shocked that Tec had solved the problem in such a short amount of time.

“Well, you see, when we walked, our shoes crushed the dry leaves making a crunching sound, right?” Tec asked.

“Yes, so what’s your point?” Jerry asked, eagerly waiting for an answer.

“The creature, who had enormous weight, didn’t make any sound at all!” Said Tec. “And to prove that it was a hologram, not anything else, I confirmed it was not just the feet that were pixelated, it’s whole body, was made of pixels!”

“Wow!” Jim said, amazed.

“But, I still need to go back by myself to the area to confirm my hypothesis,” Tec said.

Jerry usually would have made an excuse for Tec not to go, but now that Jerry knew that it was a hologram, he felt safe enough to let Tec go.

When Tec arrived at the area, this time in stealth mode, he immediately confirmed his hypothesis, the creature yet again made no sound as it patrolled the area where it lived.

After Tec had contacted the police and they had taken down the hologram, they found out who had been behind all of this, Killian Smith, a criminal mastermind. Killian was taken to court and was sent into lifelong jail.

After Tec attended the court session as a witness of Killian’s thefts, he went back to the area of the hologram, the police were still there, awing over massive amounts of gold that Killian had stolen and hidden underground. Killian made the hologram to make sure nobody could steal the gold from him. For helping solve the case, the police decided to give him 50% of the gold. Tec insisted that they take it but he made sure not to push too much because deep down, he wanted the gold.

When Tec arrived at Jerry’s house he told Jim they needed to go, so after saying their goodbyes, they went back to their apartment, and Jim was shocked to see Tec hauling in gold. When Tec was finished getting all the gold in, Jim asked what had happened and how he got gold. So Tec sat himself and Jim down and told him all about it. Jim’s mouth was hanging the whole time. After Tec finished telling Jim his tale, Jim was amazed.“Wow!” Jim said, “This might be the craziest case we have ever had!”

“Oh, don’t worry my dear Bennet,” Said Tec grinning. “I’m going to have a lot of crazier cases.”
